HISTORY

MAFFRA GOLF CLUB

Step back in time and discover the captivating history of golf in Maffra. Picture this: it's 1909, and golf enthusiasts are teeing off for the very first time on the picturesque "Hillside" course. Little did they know that this humble beginning would lay the foundation for a rich golfing legacy in the region.

ORIGINS

In 1919, the club re-formed at "Mewburn Park," introducing a 9-hole course with sand scrapes. But that was just the beginning of their ambitious vision. By 1928, the course expanded to a full-fledged 18-hole wonder, enchanting golfers with its scenic beauty.

However, fate had its own plans, and the club faced challenging times during the tumultuous years of the First and Second World Wars. Both times, the club had to temporarily suspend its activities, leaving a void in the hearts of avid golfers. Yet, true resilience shone through as the club emerged stronger after each period of recess.

Vision

In 1950, the club reached a pivotal moment. A public meeting was held at the esteemed Maffra Mechanics Hall, where the decision was made to acquire land that the club could call its own. With an audacious purchase of 132 acres for a mere £28/10/- in 1951, the Maffra Golf Club stepped into a new era.

To bring their vision to life, they enlisted the expertise of renowned golf architect, Mr. Berriman. Months of dedication and collective effort transformed the landscape into a magnificent 18-hole golf course, complete with lush greens that beckoned golfers from far and wide.

The club's rich history is woven not only by the land and courses but also by the remarkable individuals who contributed their passion and leadership. Mr. Fred Witt, the first greenkeeper, meticulously tended to the course, ensuring its impeccable condition. Dr. Salvaris, the inaugural president, led the club with distinction, while Mrs. R Gilder made history as the first "Associate" president, breaking barriers and inspiring generations to come.

Throughout the years, the Maffra Golf Club's clubhouse has been a cherished symbol of community and camaraderie. The old clubhouse from "Mewburn Park" found its new home at the club's current site, acting as a testament to the club's journey and its commitment to preserving its heritage. Extensive renovations in 1973 breathed new life into the clubhouse, creating a welcoming space for golfers to share stories and create lasting memories.
